Tasks

The German Social Insurance System maintains a European Representation in Brussels representing all of its various sectors, such as pension, health and accident insurance. This representation keeps the central organisations of German Social Insurance informed about all pertinent developments in the European unification process and contributes its guiding principles of self-administration, solidarity and distance from the state to community political education.

Tasks of the European Representation

The European Representation of the German Social Insurance System has the task of expanding and deepening contacts with the European institutions, with the aim of effectively bringing the expertise of German Social Insurance to bear on the European decision-making process. In particular, the European Representation is responsible for the following tasks:

  • Providing regular information to the German insurance funds and their federations on legislation and programmes of action proposed by the European communities.
  • On-site observation and evaluation of European social policy.
  • Updating the German funding institutions on issues for which concrete action must be taken.
  • Promoting open dialogue with the bodies and decision-making agencies of the European communities.
  • Promoting professional co-operation with Brussels-based government agencies from Germany and other countries, as well as with national federations from other Member States and with international social law organisations.
  • Organising conferences on European social law and meetings between experts on technical co-operation issues between social security institutions in Europe.

In addition, the European Representation reports on socio-political issues in the European Union in its news magazine EUREPORTsocial, published eight times a year.
